An Ivy League-heist, Instagram = seized yachts & baby drama 👀🍿🧃
The amount of 🗑️ 🔥 this week is absurd
Did you catch yesterday’s article about how we got sucked into a TikTok influencer’s fandom and got the wrath of some Boomer lady trolls? If not, check it out here. Also, please don’t be worried that we’ll be double-emailing you too frequently because 1) I’m lazy and 2) idk how frequently there’ll be worthwhile fodder for insane content like that.
Never fear, there were also PLENTY of scandals we didn’t get ourselves into.
But of course 12 hours after I typed the above paragraph I maaay have been proven wrong. Here's a breaking scandal that we’re trying to cover (thank you Laurie for the tip!): NY Times-published influencer, Erin Gates, of ElementStyle has been posting in her Instagram stories that it seems like bespoke furniture company, The CEH is pulling a scam. Some screenshots of her stories are below. Erin has posted some video stories that are also worth watching— one of her quotes is,“Basically this is turning into an Anna Delvey… Elizabeth Holmes… pyramid scheme-situation, it seems. But in furniture.”
The CEH has turned off commenting on their Instagram posts which is never a good sign, and means we’re in for some detective work.
Stay tuned— this gumshoes is updating this article here as the story develops.
👀🍿🧃, indeed.
Weekly Proof That Truth Will Always Be More Scandalous Than Fiction
After seeing Katie Notopoulos’s tweet, we had to add this to the lead of today’s issue because articles like this are literally why we were inspired to start this newsletter.
Now for our regularly scheduled programming, but no less insane:
“Russian Oligarchs Keep Getting Screwed Over by Yacht Selfies”- Imagine disappointing your parents because your duck-face selfie led to the freezing of your family’s assets.
“Furious Russian influencers are slamming Chanel for banning them. Some have boasted of a workaround.”- This article also falls under the “Things I can’t garner any sympathy for” category.
“How Yale School of Medicine worker stole $40 million: Bought THOUSANDS of tablet computers in transactions under $10k each over 10 years until anonymous tipster saw her loading them into her car”- I can’t help but wonder, who is handling Yale’s accounting if ~$4M was just getting funneled out of the budget every year?
“Rapper Soulja Boy's longtime girlfriend reveals she was blindsided by news that he's expecting a child with another woman - learning about it when he posted the gender reveal to Instagram”- Well that’s savage. In college I found out my high school boyfriend had broken up with me because Facebook alerted me that his Relationship Status had changed to single, and I thought that was bad.
“Erika Girardi Named in $50 Million Lawsuit Accusing Her of Being 'Frontwoman' in Ex Tom's 'Scheme'“- Whoopsie. Looks like she might be living in a different kind of big house than she’s used to. RHOP, season one?
“Ex-Chateau Marmont Workers Want Jay-Z Party Investigated”- I couldn’t read this article without wondering if the union parked the giant inflatable rats outside the hotel. Or is that just an NYC thing?
“Food ‘Influencer’ Gets Flamed After Allegedly Trying To Extort A Restaurant For A Good Review” - Written by our friends over at Brobible (hi Brandon!), this influencer was cancelled after trying to extort a restaurant for… $100. No, there aren’t any zeros missing there.
“Liberal Tech Giant’s Employees Fume About Work for GOP” - Imagine working for a team that sent out nine emails a day. Regardless of political affiliation, we can probably all agree that that’s an insane amount of emails.
Unsurprisingly, production of reality TV is rife with drama off-camera:
“Bravo Needs an Adderall Reckoning”- This reminds me of the three seasons of Unreal which is a dramatization of how The Bachelor and other reality shows are produced. For those who haven’t watched yet, it’s available on Hulu.
“America's Next Top Model producers 'KNEW disgraced winner Angelea Preston worked as an escort when they allowed her to take part in All Stars season but disqualified her at finale and pretended it was news to them when another contestant reported her'"- Better late than never on the truth coming to light.
More Serious Stories
We realize some of these can be triggering for some readers, so feel free to skip!
“Social Media Therapists Can Resemble Cult Leaders”- Immediately upon seeing this story, I wanted to also recommend Sounds Like a Cult’s The Cult of Instagram Therapists episode- so was hyped to see the episode inspired the article! And if you were also wondering who the episode was (maybe) referencing, I found this Reddit thread. 👀
