Hi Wrecklings! Happy spooky season! I’ve been watching the absolutely insane true crime docu-series Sins of Our Mother. Well worth a watch, even if you’re already familiar with the case.
Here are this week’s stories to check out, if you need a break from bucket bunny/lineman drama on TikTok.
“The Try Guys Try Explaining How They Fired Their Friend”- The group did an excellent job addressing a difficult situation with gravitas and candor— A+ crisis comms and I truly empathize with the remaining guys.
“Kim Kardashian pays over $1 million to settle SEC charges linked to a crypto promo on her Instagram”- This feels like the equivalent of me paying a parking ticket but sure, wow, well done setting an example!
“A famous poker player alleges he was 'clearly cheated' in one of the biggest, most famous cash games in the US”- I don’t know enough (ahem, anything) about poker to enjoy the full breadth of what happened here but if you’re into cards, worth checking out. Lie detectors might be involved in the follow-up investigation.
“Swiss Court Orders Mass Slaughter Of Innocent Chocolate Bunnies”- I hope by “destroy” they mean “donate to the hungry” or something.
“New 'Barney' Docuseries Exposes Dark Side of Kids Show: Death Threats, Drug Rumors and Intense Hatred”- This trailer is going to give me nightmares— and seriously consider subscribing to Peacock so that I can keep watching Law & Order.
“Company Asked Employees to Bring Family, Pets to Office to Work Through Hurricane Ian”- How dystopian! It’s like after Hurricane Sandy— colleagues and I still had to come into work and were instructed to wear winter clothes because ConEd turned off the heat because they were afraid that the broken crane dangling a block away from our office would collapse and cause gas explosions.
“An Apple executive is leaving the company after being filmed joking about fondling 'big-bre@sted women' in a viral TikTok video”- A good example of money not being able to buy class.
“Elon Musk’s Texts Shatter the Myth of the Tech Genius”- … and money can’t buy intelligence either.
“TikTok's 'stay-at-home girlfriends' go viral displaying lives of luxury. They face mockery and are told they're anti-feminist — they disagree.”- Cool lifestyle but I’d be concerned about ✨transferable skills✨ if (ahem, when?) things went south here.
“Aretha Franklin Was Tracked By the FBI for 40 Years. Here’s What’s In Her File”- Not surprisingly, a whole lotta nothing.
“Celsius founder took out $10 million before pausing withdrawals and filing for bankruptcy”- Conveniently a fact left out by all the press statements…
“I Uncovered an Army of Fake Men on Hinge”- Absolutely besides the point of this story, it quoted publicist Justine Sacco who has an interesting history in the world of online drama.
“‘Are you a hommasexyuh?’: Itzpsyiconic is TikTok Live’s hilarious and bizarre rising star”- Recognizing it’s maybe a sign I’m officially old/uncool/etc, this TikTok goes over my elderly millennial brain.
“The Tacky Weed Bodega Is Everywhere (for Now)”- Ok, I recently was offered a piece of a bodega chocolate bar and fortunately I thought to do some calculations before eating a square. Turns out the bar had 300mg of THC across 12 squares— which means I would have been on the moon if I’d eaten what I’d thought was a serving.
