Squishmallow bullies, in-demand fake Birkins & a historian shades KimK 👀🍿🧃
Oh, and a septuagenarian Tinder Swindler
Hello Wrecklings! What a garbage week. Unsurprisingly, it’s not just male politicians ruining people’s lives, so there’s no shortage of scamdal if you’d like some distraction from doomscrolling.
“The Worst Boyfriend on the Upper East Side”- I can’t read “Nelson Roth… is the fakest f*cking name I’ve ever heard,” in anything but a Regina George voice. Also let’s make a Wreck List pledge to never send money to anyone you recently started dating. K? 🙏
“Squishmallows are adorable, but their online fandom has a dark side”- Because of course it does. “These people are going feral” is also a generally apt description about people on the internet, always.
“This Socially Conscious Subscription Box Company Has Suddenly–And Silently–Shut Down”- Guessing that the tea pots they purchased that burned people were acquired on Wish or somewhere else equally reputable.
“Historians Complain Kim Kardashian Endangered Marilyn Monroe's Iconic Dress: 'Putting It at Risk'“- But also… is anyone actually shocked that KimK gave zero f*cks about whether she was putting a piece of history at risk? Also peep that historian shade being thrown.
“The Unravelling of an Expert on Serial Killers”- Not entirely unsurprising that a guy who promised to send people bits of serial killer (?!) caught the attention of some amateur internet sleuths. You may also think that was a typo, as did The Wreck List editor:
“The Rich New York Women Who Love Their Fake Birkins”- This is certainly the posh version of the time a friend and I were shoved into a van full of fake Lacoste shirts because he wanted to snag one on Canal Street— and yes, I 1000% thought I was going to die in the moment someone whistled about the cops coming and a driver jumped into the van and started it up.
“Vegan influencers are accused of 'smirking' their way through apology video - after being blasted for claiming that eating mushrooms and soya products can reduce the risk of breast cancer”- These men need to learn the difference between an excuse and an apology and hire a publicist that has the patience for that conversation.
“A Revolt Is Brewing at Prince Harry’s Silicon Valley Gig BetterUp”- Only someone unfamiliar with the career/life coach journey would make the bar for each session be “amazing” or “life-changing.” P.S. for those of you in need of a coach, mine is amazing and literally the best (#NotAnAd).
“Less than a month after I met my soulmate, I ended my 14-year marriage”- This one has been all over Twitter because of the very subtle and yet totally weird twist this piece takes when reading the author’s blurb at the end of the piece.
“A Reddit forum dedicated to 'snarking' on influencers is home to over 100,000 members — some think the community has gone too far”- This subreddit has been on our radar for a bit and one of the influencers we used to know personally is one of the focuses of a weekly thread and that seems… weirdly catty, even for the internet.
“Netflix Guts Editorial Arm 'Tudum'“- A not unsurprising move given Netflix’s difficult few weeks but keep these writers in mind for any opportunities you might know of.
“Scene Stealer: The True Lies of Elisabeth Finch”- Remember a few weeks ago we included an article about the Grey’s Anatomy writer had lied about her personal battle with various medical issues (including cancer)? Vanity Fair has written a very long, two-part exposé.
“Inside the Growing Discontent Behind Nintendo’s Fun Facade”- Call me jaded but in my experience even applying for dream jobs can lead to being massively disillusioned with the brand afterwards… I once applied to a company I deeply respected and the second interview round was eleven candidates on the same zoom (myself being the only woman), pitching themselves for two minutes each, with cameras-off. And then I just… never heard from the company again….?
“Madison Cawthorn Is Trying to Commit Every Possible Scandal The Republican congressman’s inspiring quest to shoot the moon”- Here’s a politician that even Olivia Pope couldn’t save.
“Sofia Franklyn to Alex Cooper We Can Squash 'Call Her Daddy' Beef...... But It Won't Be 'Kumbaya'“- For those that also followed this feud, this is an interesting update after all this time… curious to see if anything comes of it.
Weekly Proof That Truth Will Always Be More Scandalous Than Fiction
“The Staircase Killer... and the most sensational twist of all: It was the documentary pivotal in securing the release of a novelist jailed for murdering his wife but it left out one astonishing fact - the filmmaker was his LOVER”- The upcoming HBO dramatization (coming out tomorrow!) seems worth a watch. Am I excited to see how the owl theory gets handled? Absolutely.
